Diversity all the way

2021: the year of inclusion

We have lived through 2020, a year of radical transformation. We are living through massive societal shifts. Just when we were hoping to usher in a kinder 2021, white supremacists stormed Capitol Hill. The UK went into another hard lockdown: Unicef delivered food parcels to families in Manchester, which was unheard of.

The impact of this change has deepened inequities. Take, for example, working women. In the US, the workforce lost 140,000 jobs in December (Forbes), but women lost a net of 156,000 jobs while men gained at net 16,000 jobs. In other words, women accounted for 100% of the labour market's first month of losses.

So, what do we hold on to in 2021? Hope.

Individuals and leaders make the difference, like Marcus Rashford, our food superhero, or Jacinda Adern, NZ's PM who leads with compassion, empathy and courage (and zero Covid-19 cases).

What they do? Act.

In 2021, we're committed to driving inclusion the heartland of every business and with it, all the products and services we provide to our audiences. If the bombshell of 2020 taught us one thing, inclusion comes first.

Our commitment to you is to bring you actions you can take, every time you hear from us.

WATCH: CRIP Camp (thanks Sam Renke, Actor, and Disability Activist, for the suggestion). Down the road from Woodstock, a revolution blossomed at a ramshackle Camp Jened for teenagers with disabiltiies. This camp transformed lives and sparked a landmark movement.

READ: Real Life - Brandon Taylor. This coming-of-age, campus novel focuses on a queer, Black protagonist in the role of a PhD student in a white-dominated US town. Taylor's prose draws out 'the profound from the mundane' (Jeremy O Harris, NYT). In 2020, the novel was shortlisted for the Booker Prize.

LISTEN: 'How to Vaccinate the World'. If - like us - Covid vaccination is just about the only hope right now, this one's a good listen. Experts explain science to the masses, tackling jargon and answering questions we're all slightly confused by. Run by a BBC Radio 4 team, the podcast is informative and takes a global perspective.

Wishing you all the hope for January
